I am as excited as ever to herald the start of the 3rd annual National Supply Teacher Week!
June 15th - 19th gives us all a chance to celebrate education's fourth emergency service. It also provides a focus for the rest of the supply teaching community, a time to look at how we are supporting our supply teachers. Take a look at the Aims of the Week. Why not schedule one Aim per month into your staff meetings, and see where you stand in helping to achieve the aim, and how you can help us all move forward with it?
Pledges in support of #NSTW2015 will begin to appear here shortly. During the Week, these pledges will turn into records of actions each organisation has made.
For details on how to pledge and an image file of the supporters logo, please email me.
At Capita, we understand that supply teaching means something different to every educator. To some it’s a long-term career path, providing a great mix of flexibility and stability; to others it’s a rewarding temporary transition between other roles.
One thing is for sure: without supply teachers stepping into the breach and providing an invaluable service to schools, every single day, tens of thousands of children’s education would be adversely effected.
Each week, Capita matches thousands of supply teachers to suitable assignments, making sure that the person we send is the correct fit for the school so that each child continues to get the best education. It’s not just a job to us. We are proud of what we do. And the happiness of our supply teachers is of paramount importance to us.
We continuously strive to improve our service to our supply teachers by ensuring they feel valued as well as supported and respected. That includes a range of CPD (including courses on safeguarding and Ofsted expectations), free Capita open days organised by our local teams and bottomless coffee cup drop-in sessions, where all our candidates can pop in for a chat and address any questions they may have.
To Capita, supply teachers are the often-unsung heroes of education, and that is why we are so pleased to be associated with National Supply Teacher Week 2015.
Strategic Operations Director
Staff from both of our branches are contacting all of our clients to ask them to nominate their top 3 supply teachers from the 2014/215 academic year. The teachers with the most votes from each office will be presented with a bottle of champagne during National Supply Teacher Week.
On Friday 19th June, we will be choosing one lucky school to receive lunch time treats for their permanent and supply staff to enjoy!
School House Recruitment is a local and independent agency with offices in Teesside and Sheffield.
The West Country Educational Agency has been providing supply teachers in Wiltshire and the surrounding area’s for more than 15 years. Owned by an ex-primary school teacher with a staff all experienced in education we are still growing and, in response to demand from our schools, have expanded to supply teaching assistants this year as well.
At West Country we endeavour to ensure our teachers are acknowledged and know that they are appreciated every week, however, it is a pleasure to be supporting National Supply Teacher Week this year - something that strives to get them wider recognition.
We are proud to offer our teachers CPD and were thrilled when more than 70 of our teachers attended our training course on the New National Curriculum, enabling them to get to know each other and share experiences and ideas.
We are pleased to provide every supply teacher working for us with a handbook, giving them advice and an awareness of the opportunities and pitfalls that can face a new supply teacher.
We firmly believe that our success as an agency comes from an understanding of our teachers and our schools. We make sure we know our teachers and what they want from supply teaching, we can then ensure we place them in the best teaching environment for them. We also work to build strong relationships with our schools. Understanding their ethos and requirements means that we provide them with seamless supply, aiming to ensure that their school runs as smoothly with our supply teachers in place as they do with their own staff.
As we are recommended to the majority of our new teachers by other teachers or by schools that either use us or know our reputation we must be doing something right!
We will be hi-lighting Supply Teacher Week to all of our schools and teachers - looking to recognise particular success in the coming week.
Whilst we are always on call - our office is open daily from 9.00am until 6.00pm for any teachers who want to pop in or ring for a chat.
Late last year in November 2014, the BBC reported, “latest figures on teacher trainee recruitment predict a 7% shortfall for next September - the third in a row and supply teacher agencies are now turning to Canada & Australia in search of trained teachers”. The figures clearly depict the significant dearth of trained teachers in the country and an opportune moment for us to draw attention to the value that ‘supply teachers’ bring to the schools.
Filling in for absent staff is primarily what a supply teacher is expected to do, while ensuring that the class lessons provide the consistency for the benefit of the students and school. The amount spent on supply teachers has “gone up by more than £50m “, reported by Guardian, May, 2015, due to the gaps in school’s current staff teams having increased significantly. In literal terms, the supply teachers are filling in for the inadequacies of the existing staff members and yet fall behind in their recognition when its time.
During the fantastic initiative of ‘National Supply Teacher’s Week’, we, at Total Assist Education wish to congratulate all the supply teachers for their endless efforts in this noble cause of imparting knowledge. Once said, “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination and instil a love for learning”. Our supply teachers invest themselves physically / emotionally in creating a bond with a new set of school children every day. It is commendable on their part, when compared to other staff who enjoy a few months of probation to settle into their new place of work and test the waters before they choose to dive into it.
In order to provide the much due recognition to our teachers and counter the media stories of teaching standards slipping, we have introduced the following initiatives to support our Supply Teachers :
· Offering CPD training to our teachers to hone their skills further
· Posting a link to this fantastic week on our email signatures and website to raise awareness
· NQT webinars and open days
· Supply Teacher of the Term Award. Our schools will be asked towards the end of each term for nominations. The winning teacher will feature on our website and social media and be presented with their award at the school.
With 95% of the schools coming back to Total Assist Education with repeat requests for supply teachers, as an organisation we ensure that we provide an added value to our teacher’s which goes beyond informing them about their place of work. With over 5 years of experience as an education staff provider, Total Assist Education has dedicated field based officers , part of the compliance team who can also provide Basic Life Support and Manual Handling Training. We are ISO 9001 compliant and audited regularly by a qualified external organisation – Neuven – who awarded us a Platinum audit score, the highest award possible.
Total Assist Education is always here to plug the gaps and engage at a personal level with our supply teachers to ensure we provide adequate solutions to any of their concerns. We welcome more teachers to connect with us to know and look forward to hearing from you.

He/She will receive the high street vouchers in recognition of their professionalism, hard work and an enthusiastic approach.

Supply Teachers play such an important part in the success of a child's education and we feel its important for us to ensure the supply teachers are treated with the respect they deserve.
During National Supply Teacher Week Provide Education are going to do the following to show our appreciation to our amazing team of Supply Teachers:
To help combat the recurring feeling amongst supply teachers of isolation
We will be inviting all our existing supply teachers to come and visit us in any of our offices during National Supply Teachers Week for a cuppa, a cake and a chat. This will enable teachers to meet each other which will help combat the recurring feeling amongst supply teachers of isolation. All year round we operate an open door policy to all supply teachers which enables us to offer ongoing support to all our staff during any potential challenging times.
To show appreciation for those working as supply teachers
We will be asking schools for nominations from all schools across all branches and asking them to nominate any teachers they feel are worthy of an award. We regularly feedback to all our teachers and offer teacher of the month awards in addition to an overall teacher of the year. This will help us show our appreciation to the teachers and the appreciation on behalf of the schools. Those teachers that do go above and beyond should be recognised for their excellent commitment for the education of children.
To increase awareness of the skills needed to be a supply teacher
During the period in and around National Teachers Week we recruit a high number of NQT’s keen to increase their experience of teaching once they have finished their final placements. We offer the ongoing support required to all NQT’s who are experiencing paid teaching for the very first time in a supply capacity. We discuss the skills required to be successful as a supply teacher and offer specific guidance in particular teaching environments.
To promote CPD for Supply Teachers
· Provide Education offer a range of paid for CPD opportunities fopr our supply staff. We will be using the week to help promote the range of courses available during the summer term as well as listening to the needs of our supply staff for the forthcoming year.
We are planning a Top Supply Teachers Awards, with having our schools vote for our Top 3 Teachers of the Year. We are also planning a special family day out to be spent with our teachers and families. The top 3 teachers will be given their special prizes which will include a bottle of bubbly, chocolates and vouchers!

Classpeople are delighted to support National Supply Teacher Week 2015
Classpeople was set up 12 years ago by ex-primary teacher, Lynis Bassett, who wanted to change the way that supply was viewed. Since starting up we have expanded across the South-West covering early years, Primary, SEN, secondary and leadership to become a one stop shop for supply education.
We have always been dedicated to ensuring that our supply teachers have access to the tools that they need to be the very best teachers that they can be. We are committed to ensuring that our teachers have access to regular CPD and socials because we know how important it is to walk in to a classroom with confidence and we also know that life in supply can sometimes be lonely.
This year we have been stepping that up a notch offering work on guarantee and have some exciting plans for the next academic year that will be revealed in September 2015! We are also going to be focusing on championing supply teachers in the press and raising awareness of the importance they play in educating the next generation.
